Best Virtual Assistant Companies to Work for in the Philippines

If you’re having a difficult time becoming a virtual assistant on your own, I highly recommend starting by working for a virtual assistant agency. They provide you with the training and confidence you need to do the job well and fast-track your online career, especially if you don’t have any work experience at all.

The best virtual assistant companies to work for in the Philippines are usually those with an excellent reputation among the Remote Filipino Worker (RFW) community.

I’ve organized in this guide a list of VA agency options, both big and small, and their corresponding reviews. I’ve also included how you can identify which ones you should be applying to, after all, the best VA agency specifically for you would depend on what your personal work goals are.

1) Athena Executive Assistants

best virtual assistant companies to work for philippines 2 (athena va review)

From my understanding, Athena gained quite a following  due mainly in part to its strong  social media presence, particularly on TikTok. It was recommended early on by many online influencers due to the competitive package, elite clients, and professional work culture.

Their mission is to have a team of top-talent Filipino VAs so they have strict application requirements but also a very robust training program. Other perks include 100% remote work, health insurance, and certification.

Athena grew rapidly with the leadership of Jonathan Swanson, co-founder of another startup called Thumbtack.com, and the local management team. They have recently become a locally SEC-registered company which is good for regulation purposes. But talk on social media is that this has also brought upon some painful changes.

While it’s hard to say which VA agency is the largest in the Philippines, you can say that Cyberbacker PH is certainly one of the most prominent. I see people ask about Cyberbacker almost every week on social media. Early on, they even had billboards in EDSA!

That said, one tip that I see frequently on social media regarding Cyberbacker is that the work culture and job application process is not for everyone.

You’re free to read up on what people say about them on social media. But if you prefer experiencing their culture firsthand, you could join one of their career nights. For more details about the company, please see “Is Cyberbacker Legit? Cyberbacker Reviews, Jobs & Salary“.

How Can I Increase My Chances of Being Hired by the Best Virtual Assistant Companies in the Philippines?

Needless to say, the best VA agencies in the Philippines also have a stringent process to select only the top VA candidates to work with their clients. You have to do everything you can to increase your chances.

Here’s what I did when I applied to a VA agency:

1) Do research on the VA agency. In order to better understand each VA agency’s culture and requirements, I visited their website and socials. The information I collected was useful for customizing my application, from my writing resume to answering questions during the job interview.

2) Create a Customized Resume. When I was starting out, I just sent the same job application to many companies. The result: No replies at all! It was heartbreaking as a beginner.

I learned later on that this is one of the biggest mistakes applicants make. It’s very difficult for a job application to stand out if it’s not tailored to the requirements of the job. So, now I always customize my application when applying for a job, VA agency or not.

Of course, I do understand the difficulty of doing this yourself. Customizing your application is not only time-consuming, but it’s also hard to do when you are not familiar with industry best practices.

So, we made an easy-to-use AI-powered tool that can help you with that, the RFW Job Excelerator:

It’s basically a tool that will help translate your experience and skills into a job application, from your resume to your answers to the job interview. For details, see “Free ChatGPT Resume Template: How to Land a Job Using AI“.

3) Get ready for the interview and exam. To be quite transparent, I choke on my words and get frequent mental blocks during job interviews. If that also sounds like you, you can do what I do. I write down my answers in advance to common interview questions. But my advice there is to understand the answers, not memorize. So, you can adjust accordingly if the interviewer throws out a curve ball.

Each VA company may have a different job application process but most of them will check your experience, language skills, and adaptability. And I strongly recommend not to wait until you get hired before improving yourself.

This is also something you can do in advance. Aside from that, you can get experience by making samples, you can practice English by recording yourself, and improve your adaptability by learning new skills.

4) Prepare the right tools and equipment. Most virtual assistant companies have a list of required equipment or computer specs before they consider your application. I make sure to read them carefully before applying or buying anything.

Pro Tip: VA agencies are very sensitive to noise pollution in video calls because that’s also important for their clients. Make sure to go to a quiet room with no distractions during your interview.

But sometimes, noise can be out of our control. For those instances, you should use a noise-cancelling headset like the Logitech H340 for those important, make-or-break job interviews or client calls.

But if you’re a beginner, it’s totally understandable if you don’t have the budget for this yet. There are free, but limited noise canceling techniques you can try out instead, like Krisp.ai.

Is It Better to Work for a Big or Small Virtual Assistant Agency?

Most of the VA agencies listed above are big agencies that are more well-known among the Remote Filipino Worker community. They offer excellent training but at the cost of stricter requirements and a higher amount of competition.

Thus, there’s a certain prestige associated with working with the best virtual assistant companies in the Philippines. However, if they don’t fit your objectives, then they are not exactly the best for you.

You can also consider applying to smaller agencies instead. From what I’ve experienced, I can say that this is also my preferred approach.

Here, management is usually more hands-on, so there’s a personal approach to how you are trained and how your concerns are addressed. There’s also much less competition so it might be easier to get in even with no experience.

However, there’s still the risk of encountering scams when browsing the VA agencies available online. So, you need to be able to weed out the legit VA agencies from the bad ones.

How Do I Find Legit Virtual Assistant Agencies?

When you search Google for VA agencies, you won’t find the smaller VA agencies on the first page. You need to dig through a few more pages to find what you need. In fact, Google may not be the best way to find a small VA agency if you don’t already know their name.

Since you are looking for smaller VA agencies, you have to know that their web presence is mostly through job platforms, social media, and word of mouth. So, the best place to look would be LinkedIn, which functions as both a job platform and a social media website.

Here are some other methods you can use to find them:

  • Facebook Groups: Do a search using virtual assistant agency keywords in popular freelancing FB groups such as Online Filipino Freelancers or Freelancers in the Philippines (FLIP).
  • Instagram: Use hashtags combined with virtual assistant keywords on the search bar. Examples include #virtualassistantph, #virtualassistance, #filipinovirtualassistance, and #pinoyvirtualassistant.
  • Reddit: Do a search using virtual assistant agency keywords in an online work subreddit such as r/buhaydigital.

But remember to always, always do your research on the VA agency before applying. Once you find out the name of the VA agency, visit everything from their socials to their official website. Check their reviews and also what people are saying about them on social media.

If they have no web presence at all, then you shouldn’t bother with that agency. It’s better to be safe than sorry. Also, remember rule number #1If they’re asking for payment before you get the job, then it’s a scam.

You can also protect yourself from not getting paid by following the tips from the article “5 Tips to Avoid Unpaid Payments”.

The Top Virtual Assistant Agencies You’ve Never Heard of

Using the methods above, here are some of the best virtual assistant agencies we’ve found that are on the relatively smaller side.

Some of the companies listed above have a global presence but have a small Philippine presence.

All of them have their official website and some form of social media page. But make sure to do your due diligence before applying. Check reviews and ask people on online communities if they have any experience with these VA agencies.

Even if they are legit, it’s still a good idea to check if they are a good fit for your goals.

Is Joining a Virtual Assistant Agency Worth It?

Getting hired as a virtual assistant through an agency means they are earning a cut from what the client is paying for your work. It’s up to you to decide if the lower take-home pay is worth the exposure, training, and experience that you are getting.

If you have no work experience at all, then agencies are an excellent way to launch your online career. But if you already have some corporate experience, then you might already have the discipline and skills needed to make it on your own as an independent VA.

Alternatively, if don’t want to join a VA agency or have corporate experience, then learning skills from a VA course might be what you need instead. Although personally I don’t recommend VA courses since you can find most information for free online, they do have their benefits.

But regardless of where you start, you must learn how to market yourself online and get your own clients. You can start by creating an impressive virtual assistant resume and portfolio that answers the needs of your target market.

Is It Possible to Earn 6 Digits as a Virtual Assistant under an Agency?

It’s not impossible, but it’s rare. This is especially true for the bigger agencies included in the list of top virtual assistant companies. Bigger agencies need to take a larger cut of your pay since they also have larger upkeep costs associated with managing a large group of employees.

These include expenses for training, HR, management, benefits, and more. Not to mention, they also have marketing costs associated with finding clients for you and the agency.

While it’s certainly possible to earn 6 digits monthly as a Filipino virtual assistant, you might have a better chance of achieving that goal once you become independent.

Conclusion: Virtual Assistant Agencies Are Excellent Starting Points

Virtual assistant agencies are perfect for people who want a more structured way to begin their careers online. I can recommend them as excellent starting points for fresh graduates, students, and those with little office work experience.

If you do get hired by one of the best virtual assistant companies in the Philippines, make sure to take their training seriously. It’s essential to learn the skills you need to succeed now under an agency and in the future if you ever go independent.

Becoming an independent virtual assistant gives you the potential to earn more, as well as, take charge of your own time. If your goal is to one day become independent, then you have to start preparing in the present.

You need to learn everything from what makes an effective VA portfolio to what laptop specs are required for virtual assistants. Realistically, it’s going to take lots of caffeine-fueled nights and long working hours.

So, you also need to make sure you are taking care of your most important asset – your body. Invest in the right WFH equipment. They can help you prevent back pain, carpal tunnel, plus other painful (and costly) health problems.

For wrist pain, an ergonomic mouse will go a long way. The one I personally use is the vertical mouse ‘Logitech Lift.

I’ve been using it for over a year now. The vertical orientation takes some getting used to, but my wrist pain alleviated significantly from just a few weeks of use. And coupled with some wrist exercises I found on TikTok, the pain has pretty much disappeared.

Success as a virtual assistant will take a lot of time and investment. There will be times when you feel that you are stumbling around without a clue. But you’ll be able to rely on your training and experience to get you past these obstacles and on your way to success.
